This is part of its efforts to popularize science to the General Public and Students who are pursuing science as their career. TNSF attempt to focus on students on higher science as everyone knows that learning of science at college within the curriculum is not enough to acquire holistic knowledge of science at the appropriate time. Hence, to fill the gap between what students are acquiring through the curriculum and what it is required, TNSF is planning its activities on higher science to students who are pursuing higher education.




The ice on earth, the cryosphere, is inextricably tied up with the climate of the earth. It affects and is affected by life on earth. This talk is an attempt to argue why this is so ? How does the climate affect the ice and why does the ice affect the climate ? What caused the ice ages ? How did they affect the sea level ? Why is this interplay of great concern today ? What is the evidence that the climate is changing at an "unnaturally" fast rate today ? Closer home, what is the role of the ice in the Himalaya in the water cycle ? How will the current rapid rate of climate change affect the flow of the rivers of North India ? How will it affect the sea level ?

இந்து குஷ் மற்றும் இமயமலை பகுதிகளில் உள்ள பனிமலைகளுக்கு பருவநிலை மாற்றம் மிகப்பெரிய அச்சுறுத்தலாக வளர்ந்து வருவதாக ஒரு புதிய அறிக்கை தெரிவிக்கிறது. கார்பன் டை ஆக்ஸைடு உமிழ்வு உடனடியாக நிறுத்தப்படவில்லையெனில் இந்த பெரும் மலைகளில் மூன்றில் இரண்டு பங்கு பனி மலைகள் காணாமல் போகக்கூடும்.துருவப்பகுதிகளை தவிர உலகத்தில் அதிகப்படியான பனிக்கட்டிகள் கிடைப்பது இமயமலை மற்றும் இந்து குஷ் பகுதிகளில் உள்ள கே2 மற்றும் எவரெஸ்ட் மலை சிகரப்பகுதிகளில்தான். ஆனால் இந்த பனி மலை பிராந்தியம் இன்னும் ஒரு நூற்றாண்டுக்குள் வெறும் பாறைகளை கொண்ட பிராந்தியமாக மாறக்கூடும். ஏனெனில் உலகம் முழுவதும் வெப்பநிலை உயர்ந்து வருகிறது என்கின்றனர் ஆய்வாளர்கள்.

Prof Dr. Shankar R

Dr. Shankar R is a Retired Professor at the Department of Physics , The Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai. His area of interest are Glaciers and climate change, Geometry and topology of quantum many-body systems. He has his post doctoral assignments with IMSc, [1987-89] and IIT Kanpur, [1989-1991]. He is part of IMSc since 1991.

Dr. R. Jayangonda Perumal, , is Associate Professor, Department of Geology, School of Earth Sciences, Central University of Tamil Nadu, Thiruvarur. His field of specialisation is STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY AND TECTONICS. He has completed his doctoral degree at H.N.B Garhwal University, Srinagar (Garhwal), UTTARAKHAND, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology and Title of the Thesis was Structural Evolution of Mussoorrie Syncline, Lesser Himalaya, and U.P, India.
